TURNING 2027’s CHALLENGES INTO OPPORTUNITIES
The challenges facing manufacturers throughout 2026 have been well documented. Labour shortages, rising labour costs, increasing overheads and the ongoing pressure to package more efficiently have continued to impact businesses across the industry. For those operating in fresh produce, this year’s extreme heat has added another layer of complexity, affecting crop growth, volumes and, in some cases, product quality. For many businesses, these pressures are no longer temporary obstacles but part of the operating environment.
Looking ahead to 2027, we can expect further pressures. Higher recycling targets, increasing demand for product variety and greater scrutiny of investment decisions are likely to shape how manufacturers approach production and packaging. The focus is shifting from simply asking “What will this equipment cost?” to “What value will it deliver over its lifetime?” While these pressures are significant, they also present an opportunity. Businesses that get ahead of these challenges can improve operational efficiency while creating a competitive advantage. Reducing packaging material can lower costs and waste, while machinery that enables fast,
straightforward changeovers can provide the flexibility to accommodate more SKUs, varied pack formats and shorter production runs. For machinery manufacturers and suppliers, this creates an opportunity too. Our role should not simply be to provide equipment that meets today’s requirements, but to understand where our customers’ businesses are heading and develop solutions that help them prepare for what comes next.
The challenges facing manufacturers are unlikely to disappear in 2027. However, those that focus on efficiency, flexibility and total cost of ownership will be better positioned to turn those challenges into opportunities and build more competitive operations for the future.
